Have you ever noticed a small frog seal on our Breyers packaging? No, we haven’t started making ice cream for frogs. That’s The Rainforest Alliance seal, which certifies that our products are produced from farms and forests that follow sustainable practices. It’s a seal we are very proud to wear because it signifies that every scoop of Breyers helps support a better future for people and the planet.

So how exactly did Breyers earn its Rainforest Alliance seal? We’ve taken steps to ensure our ingredients like vanilla, milk and cream are sourced fairly, responsibly and sustainably from farms and smallholders. Being Rainforest Alliance Certified means are products are produced using methods that support all the three pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental.

Through our partnership with Vanilla For Change, Breyers helps to improve the livelihood of natural vanilla farmers in Madagascar by paying a premium for Rainforest Alliance Certified vanilla. The charitable organization also helps farmers diversify their crops and establish village level savings and loan associations, cooperatives and youth groups throughout the region. Since Vanilla For Change’s creation in 2014, the partnership has had a positive impact on more than 40,000 people in 76 villages.1

Breyers is also proud to work with dairy farmers to source 100% Grade A milk and cream that comes from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones. Since 95% of American dairy farms are family-owned, we work with small farms to make sure only the best milk makes it into our ice cream.2  And as these farms make steps to make dairy farming more sustainable, we’ll be there to support them.

At Breyers, we know our sustainability journey is just beginning. Our Rainforest Alliance Certified products are the first step in supporting the small farms and farming communities where we source our ingredients. Our ultimate goal is to make our ice cream as sustainable as possible to help ensure we can keep making delicious treats for years to come.
